Looking for advice from anyone who’s gotten married in a non-religious, non-“wedding”-y manner, e.g. at a courthouse

My fiance and I want to get legally married this coming week, hopefully on Halloween, because that's awesome. We'll be having a celebration with our families later, but we'd rather take care of the paperwork hassle now and have the celebration just be a separate thing. From looking at the court websites, it appears that we can go to a register of deeds, fill out some forms and give them $60, and then possibly go…somewhere (a courthouse?) and get a magistrate to marry us, if we get two witnesses.

The courthouse and magistrate part sounds kind of unappealing, though, so I wanted to find out if anyone here has been in a similar situation, and if so, how and where you got married. In other places where I've lived, there were non-religious wedding chapels where you could simply go and get married for a pretty low price and without much hassle, but I can't seem to find anything like that here. The big caveat is that we absolutely don't want whatever place we get married to be affiliated with a church in any way. We also aren't terribly interested in paying hundreds of dollars to someone who is ordained by an online organization.

So anyway, I'd love to hear advice from anyone who has also gotten married in a "we just want to do the paperwork" kind of way, whether that is advice on the nicest or lowest-hassle courthouse in the area, or advice on a wedding chapel or related type of situation I may have just missed. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Does anyone here use a trunking scanner to listen to Fire, EMS, and Law Enforcement?

Does anyone here use a trunking scanner to listen to Fire, EMS, and Law Enforcement?

I've done some research and I found out that Wake County is actually has a newish trunked radio system instead of the older VHF/UHF broadcast system. I'm not really very experienced with this, so I was wondering if anyone else is using a scanner to listen in? If so, what is the make and model of the scanner you're using?

Best family-friendly place for an adult to go for Halloween?

Best family-friendly place for an adult to go for Halloween?

I'm an adult, who wants to go somewhere in costume for Halloween. I'm not interested in any bars, or anything crazy – just a family-friendly place where I can wear my costume, without people thinking I'm weird by being there without a kid. It can be an adult-only event, or an event where kids are welcome. Candy availability would be a bonus, but isn't necessary.

Help, please?
