Moving for a job in RTP, where to live?

As the title said I'm moving to North carolina for a new job. I'm 23 and a young professional, and would like to live in an area with those of a similar age and in an area with things to do/social scene. I'm pretty liberal and tend to like artsy areas but that is not a must. My first thoughts were Raleigh but from the limited information I've gotten I've heard the commute to RTP from Raleigh can be bad. I've also been told to check out Durham and Carrboro, and was wondering if anyone here could give me more advice/ tell me if the raleigh-rtp commute rumors were true or not
